Three Tips to Remember if you’re in an Accident with your RV or Camper

RV Trip

Accidents happen, and even the most careful of drivers might find themselves in one. Here are three tips to remember if you are ever involved in an accident with your RV of Camper.

Three tips to remember if you are ever involved in an accident with your RV of Camper.

Tip One: Stay calm and get off the road

As long as there are no major injuries, moving your vehicle to safety is paramount. It is best to get off the road and assess the damages from a safe location. Drive to the shoulder or median, or if possible, to the nearest parking lot with the other vehicle. This will allow you time and space to safely assess damages, take photos, and exchange information with the other driver.

Tip Two: Take lots of photos

The old adage a picture is worth a thousand words has never been more important than when there is damage involved. Make sure that you are carefully documenting your experience and any collateral damage to your vehicle and its contents. This will be important as insurance processes the claim.

Tip Three: Get a police report

This will be critical before contacting your insurance company, and/or the other driver’s insurance company. Call 911 and let the dispatcher know that you’ve been involved in an accident and the exact location. If anyone is badly injured or requires paramedics, let them know as well. The dispatcher will contact the police department in the jurisdiction in which the accident happened and the local EMT if needed. Cooperate with the police officer when they arrive on the scene, and make sure that you give them a detailed description of what happened so that they can assess fault and a sequence of events. The police office will get the other driver’s license, registration, and insurance information and will detail that information on the police report, should you not already have it.

Depending on what state the accident happened in, you will have a window in which you will need to submit the police report to the state, so be sure to check your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles website for instructions.

Bottom line, accidents happen unfortunately, but being prepared for when they do can help expedite your road to recovery. Remember these three tips if you are ever involved in an accident with your RV or camper and you’ll be one step, or strut, ahead.
