How to Stay Safe on the Road

winterize-your-rv

We RVers traverse a lot of miles, which is why it is important to frequently review how to stay safe on the road. With the winter RV season fast approaching, here is a refresher on some travel safety tips unique to RVers. As a supplement to our top tips for RV safety post, we hope you enjoy this refresh. As always, if you have any other tips on how to stay safe on the road, let us know in the comments below.

Check Your Equipment Thoroughly

Before heading out on an excursion, it is imperative that you check your RV or camper and all equipment thoroughly, from the interiors, to the exteriors, top, and bottom. Make sure that equipment is secured, appropriately stored, and is working properly. It is also essential to check all fluid levels. Think, windshield washer fluid, coolant, oil, fuel, potable and non-potable water supplies, etc. If you’re going to wintery areas, be sure to use a non-freeze or de-icer windshield fluid. Also make sure that you have a good stock of spare tires on hand, and if you need any snow tires or chains for where you’ll be traveling to, that you have those ready to go as well. It is a good idea to do this inspection a week or so before you travel, which will ensure enough time should you have to make any edits or corrections.

Stock Up on Safety Equipment

As the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Be sure to have your First-Aid and safety equipment ready to go before you hit the road. This will ensure a smooth transition to travel without the added pressure of looking for a fire extinguisher or a Band-Aid. Check all First-Aid kits for accuracy, replenish any prescription medications, ensure your fire extinguishers are not expired or damaged, and be sure to have all your cords and jumper cables ready to go. If you travel with fuel or propane, top off your canisters and secure them. If you have a generator, make sure that it has all of its electrical cords secured and is ready for travel and harsh temperatures. A CO (carbon monoxide) monitor is essential for safe travels. You can even detach it and bring it with you to any hotel or other accommodations if you are leaving the RV or camper behind. Regardless, it is an essential travel safety tool to have. Last but not least, make sure you have some road flares and orange cones in the unlikely event that you’ll need them on the side of the road.

Consider What You Pack

Proper packing is essential, especially for winter travel. Make sure that you have the correct layers for the elements, including base layers, mid-layers, and outer layers. You’ll need sturdy, waterproof boots and several pairs of warm socks, mittens or gloves, hats, and scarves if needed. Consider investing in waterproof gear which will make a huge difference in blustery winter conditions. Also be sure to bring a shovel or two and a 25-pound bag of road salt, just in case.
