With the start to summer officially here, it’s time to update your RV travel packing list for the journeys ahead! We’ve rounded up some of our favorite items, from the everyday essentials to the not-so-common ones. Take what you need for your next RV road trip.
Essentials List
- Beverages – any good RVer knows that the key to a successful road trip is to stay hydrated. Pack your own beverages of choice in a water bottle of choice. (Pro tip: refill a gallon jug with purified water to refill your water bottles while on the road. It will save you money and reduce the need for buying single-use plastic water bottles!)
- Food – don’t forget the road snacks! A quick trip to the grocery store to load up on bulk items that can be broken down into smaller, reusable containers is key. Also, try to stay healthy by eating raw fruits and vegetables. Think carrot sticks, celery and dip, cucumber slices, blueberries, strawberries, bananas – you get the idea! The point is to load up on easy to eat foods that are road trip friendly, and healthy!
- Medication – obviously don’t forget your prescription medications (pro tip: make sure that you have enough medication for the duration of your travels, or a refill handy. It saves the hassle of having to transfer your prescription if traveling out of state.) Also, a first-aid kit is essential. Be sure it has bandages, antiseptic cream, anti-itch cream, gauze, scissors, and medical tape. Carrying a few packets of antibacterial is helpful, too.
- Toiletries – this is important to keep a sense of routine while traveling. Paring down your toiletries into smaller containers is helpful and a great space-saving technique. Travel toiletries are expensive so opt for bulk purchases and break them down into smaller containers, so you take only what you need. (Pro tip: you can use the sample packets that you may be holding on to for a rainy day.)
- Pet Accessories – don’t forget about your furry friends! If traveling with Fido, be sure to load up on your pet’s food, repackage it in smaller containers if needed, lots of water, treats, play toys, puzzles, leashes, pet waste bags, beds, and anything else to keep your pet on their normal routine. If your dog (or cat) gets car sick, speak with your veterinarian about prescribing a comfort pack to ease the ride.
Not-so-Common List
- Battery Pack and Chords – if you have multiple electronics that you’re bringing which require different power sources and chords, be sure to pack exactly what you need. If you do happen to forget an essential gadget, larger truck stops like Pilot Flying J, Sheetz, and TA (Travel Centers of America) have a good selection in the trucker section.
- Power Converter – this is a great tool if you need to charge a standard two- or three-prong plug device. Some even fit in your drink compartment and convert power through the 12-V outlet.
- Sleeping Bag, Tent, and Blankets – you might not think that you’ll need them, but if you ever do, you’ll be glad that you have them! Always travel with a sleeping bag and some blankets in the event of the unexpected.
- Rubber Sandals, Waterproof Shoes, and Rain Gear – flip flops, rubber slides, and any kind of waterproof shoes or boots are essential. From loading out in the rain to going to the pool or lake, you’ll need a shoe that is versatile enough to be submerged in water if needed (or if it’s pouring!) that will stay intact after getting wet. Also, it’s a good idea to pack a light rain jacket, poncho, and umbrella, in the event of unexpected rain.
