What Not to Do During a Flood

With the recent events of flooding in central Texas and New Mexico, to hurricane season, which is also upon us, it is important to remember what not to do during a flood, especially for those who enjoy RV travel. Keep the following list handy in case of emergency.

What Not to Do During a Flood

  • Do Not Walk Outside – when it is flash flooding outside, it goes without saying to stay indoors until the storm has passed. This includes your pets. Do not leave animals of any kind out to fend for themselves in the elements as they run the risk of danger, and possibly escaping or running away due to fear. We’ve written about how to keep your pets safe on the Fourth of July but just as they can be fearful during fireworks, they can also be fearful during thunderstorms.
  • Do Not Drive in Flood Waters – this goes hand in hand with the first point. Do not drive in flood waters as you do not know the depth of the water, nor if any dangers are lurking in it. This could be anything from broken glass or nails, to electrical wires, to waterborne diseases, and much more. You also run the risk of drowning or doing unsurmountable damage to your car, camper, or RV. As a general rule of thumb, never drive or walk in murky flood water.
  • Do Not Run Water During a Flood – some think that a rainy day is a good time to catch up on chores like dishes and laundry, but during a flash flood, this is not the case. Water lines are being taxed with the overwhelming amount and sheer velocity of water, so contaminants can get into the waterline quickly and make it unsuitable for drinking, bathing, or washing anything. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe and do not run water unnecessarily during a flood.
