On The Road
Borrowing the name from Jack Kerouac’s classic beat generation tale of travels across the country, intermittently we’ll post accounts about our life on the road. Whether you’re traveling by motorhome, fifth wheel, trailer, camper, van, or SUV, there is so much out there to explore, and we want to bring you the very best to consider for your next adventure. Read on for our most recent excursion to Greenville County and find out what makes South Carolina’s Upstate such a popular RV travel destination.
Greenville County, South Carolina
The Palmetto State’s most populous county and the largest in South Carolina, Greenville County is nestled high in the mountains in an area referred to by locals as the Upstate. Distinguishing itself from South Carolina’s other geographical regions, the Upstate consists of ten counties of which Greenville is one of them. Greenville County sits in the Piedmont region of northwestern South Carolina. Lush and dense with wooded areas, hiking trails, waterfalls, and mountains overlooking vistas below, Greenville County has much to offer outdoor enthusiasts.
Downtown and greater Greenville are not to be missed. With a cosmopolitan meets Appalachia vibe, downtown Greenville is home to some of the state’s hottest restaurants (you don’t want to miss hot spots, CAMP, Gather GVL, and Scoundrel). There are also darling boutiques to shop, like Traveling Chic Boutique and Copper Penny, and outdoor attractions galore. Notables include Falls Park on the Reedy, The Liberty Bridge, and Unity Park.
There’s more to explore outside of Greenville’s city limits. RVers will enjoy exploring the popular Paris Mountain State Park, with over 1,500 acres of hiking and biking trails. Outdoor enthusiasts and birders, especially, will enjoy the Conestee Nature Preserve south of Greenville, or the 28-mile-long Swamp Rabbit Trail, a hiking/biking/walking trail that connects Greenville all the way north to Traveler’s Rest.
Getting There
Getting to Greenville County is easy from either direction. Folks traveling in from Asheville, North Carolina can take I-26 South. Coming from Charlotte to the east, take I-85 West, and from Chattanooga or from the west, take I-85 East or alternate routes. From the Columbia, South Carolina area, take I-26 West to I-385 North.
Where to Stay
The Upstate has a litany of RV parks and campgrounds in and around the Greenville area. For an off-the-radar, unique experience, check out the tiny home communities, Creek Walk Cottages, and the soon-to-open Mountain Grove Cottages, near Traveler’s Rest, and rent a tiny home for the duration of your visit. Or, opt for a camp site at one of the many campgrounds in the area. South Carolina State Parks offers over 3,000 campgrounds statewide. For a listing of tent and RV camping in the Palmetto State, check out the park’s page here.
Before You Go
Before you go, make sure you’re prepared with all the RV care, RV maintenance, and RV restoration accessories you’ll need. RVbyLIFE’s Life-Calk® polysulfide RV sealant and Life Seal® silicone/polyurethane RV sealant are two staples to have on hand for any quick on the road repair. The Stick scraping tool also comes in handy and works well with our Release Adhesive & Sealant Remover. Of course, no trip would be complete without a bottle of all-purpose sanitizer. Our Sanitizer for Hands and Surfaces is made with only Benzalkonium Chloride and ionized water, so it won’t leave an odor or irritate the skin on application. It also continues working on surfaces once dry unlike alcohol-based sanitizer. For all other RV repair and maintenance needs, visit our website for our full product catalog.
